What is a Virtual Maths Retreat?
The virtual maths retreat is aimed at teenagers who are excited about maths and want a chance to meet others with similar interests.

The course
The course will be given online via Zoom and explore some mathematical games, puzzles and tricks. Starting with some logic puzzles you can use mathematical tools to solve, we’ll explore some combinatorial games and discuss winning strategies, then we’ll have some fun with magic tricks that are based on mathematical codes (that you can also learn to perform yourself!)
The sessions will include breaks, opportunities to chat and work with the other participants, and activities to do between the sessions.
When?
The course will be in the form of three 90-minute sessions, taking place from Tuesday 1st to Thursday 3rd of June 2021.
In the mornings, 10.30am – 12pm, there will be sessions for ages 11-12.
In the afternoons, 2pm – 3.30pm, there will be sessions for ages 13-16.
Both courses will cover the same content at a different level, so please make sure you’re booked on to the correct session for your age (not both!).
Please note: this course contains different content to the weekend course we did in November 2020 and the week-long retreat we ran in February 2021. If you attended either of these, there will be no overlap.

Who is this course suitable for?
The course is suitable for maths loving teens who want to see maths they wouldn’t normally learn about in school.
The course is fun but occasionally challenging.
Be aware that if you have explored a lot of maths before then these topics may overlap with what you already know. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
Who are we?
James Grime and Katie Steckles are mathematicians who love to talk about and share maths on the internet. You may have seen us on the YouTube channel numberphile.
Zoom
The daily session will be given online via Zoom. You will receive a link via email ten minutes before each session begins.
What you will need
In order to participate in the session, you will need a computer or phone that can dial in to a Zoom call, and the ability to type into the chat and give answers on a microphone.
You should also have a camera so you can be seen on the call, but you can turn this off after the start of the session if you wish.
You should also make sure you have some blank or lined paper, pens/pencils, scissors and a deck of playing cards handy.
We will also send you a file you should print and cut out ahead of the session (4 pages of A4), but if you don’t have access to a printer, you can make one on squared paper following our instructions.
Information for accompanying adults
All attendees under 16 must be accompanied by an adult – we’ll ask the accompanying adults to wave to us on camera at the start of each session and be around at home throughout the session.
If you have more than one child who wishes to attend the session, you will only need to buy one ticket. But it is important all children are the right age for the session – that is, ages 11-12 for the morning sessions, and ages 13-16 for the afternoon sessions.
We also have a Code of Conduct for the session – anyone found to be in violation of the Code of Conduct may be permanently removed from the session, and no refunds will be issued.
School groups
We are happy to accommodate small school groups. Because the sessions have a limited number of places, we can offer a maximum of five tickets per school.
To apply for a school booking, contact us with how many places you want and we will invoice the school.
We will then give you a discount code to pass on to your students. We will ask for the students to sign up individually.
